I created this moodboard which shows different types of Hip-Hop Magazine covers. By looking at these magazine covers, I can gain knowledge on how to make mine look as effective and eye-catching.

My AS Level Media Focus Group

I used two people in my focus group. I had 3 magazine covers which they gave me feedback on. This can help me with my magazine cover and contents page as they are telling me what they wouldn't like to see in a magazine cover. I will use this feedback to create a suitable magazine cover and contents page for my audience.

Research Rationale

The types of research I will be conducting are online surveys. By using online surveys, I can get feedback from people of my target audience. Also, I will be videoing and interviewing people of my target audience. As I have more access to teenagers and people of my age, I will be focusing on them as my target audience. I will be making up questions that most suit the brief. Questions that are about the music industry and music magazines. I can also use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to ask people different questions about music magazines. When I have collected all of this research, I will hopefully be able to have an idea of what I can put in my music magazine. I will need a camera to video myself interviewing my target audience. I will also be using the internet to look for websites where I can create questionnaires and surveys. By doing these things, I will be able to have an idea of what my target audience will want to see on my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread.

Deconstruction of two music magazines

These two magazine covers have a lot of similarities and differences. The Vibe magazine follows a lot of the conventions of a magazine as it includes 'The angle of gaze' and a masthead in the top centre. The XXL magazine deviates from the conventions of a common magazine cover as the model is not looking directly into the camera. The masthead is also to the left in the top corner which is different to the Vibe magazine masthead. Both magazines have a colour scheme of 2-3 colours. They also include fonts that are very similar. The anchorage text in the XXL magazine front cover is more obvious and is clear that it relates to the main image, whereas in the Vibe magazine, there isn't really a piece of text that is large enough to represent the main image.

Introduction to my brief

For my brief, I will be creating a music magazine, double page spread and a contents page. I have had practice making a magazine cover and contents page for my preliminary task. I have also looked at other examples from previous AS Media students which has given me ideas for what I am going to create. 

From this experience, I hope to be able to create a Hip Hop music magazine. I am choosing this genre because I have a lot of knowledge of this particular genre and because of this I feel like I will enjoy making it. The magazines that I am most inspired by are Vibe Magazine and Q Magazine as these magazines represent the genre I will be focusing on.
